This week the Performance Of The Week award goes to Southampton after they defeated the champions of Europe 2-1 at home on Saturday 30th March. Southampton carried out a high pressing game with great success, looking very comfortable in possession and limiting Chelsea to just two shots on target.
Jay Rodriguez opened the scoring with a composed finish on 23 minutes after playing a neat one-two with Steven Davis. The move summed up Southampton’s pretty and aesthetic style. John Terry then thumped in a header from a Marin corner after Jos Hooiveld slipped, gifting Terry a free header. The goal was completely against the run of play and justice was later restored in the 35th minute. A free kick was awarded by referee Jonathan Moss after Ivanović pushed Lambert. Ricky Lambert stepped up and rasped the ball in from 30 yards, a brilliant goal. Torres, who was in the wall, appeared to shy away from the ball, perhaps due to the face mask he was wearing.
This victory for Southampton is vital in their bid for survival, and sees them move to 4 points from the drop. It also applies more pressure on the unpopular Rafael Benítez who the majority of Chelsea fans have always hated. Like calls for the sacking of Benítez, calls for Ricky Lambert to be installed into the national team are also growing stronger due to the fact that he is the top English scorer in the Premier League. Mauricio Pocchetino is also starting to win his doubters over after the unpopular sacking of Nigel Adkins.
